After a 25 hour journey across three connecting flights from Melbourne, Gastronome and the City's six week European sojourn commenced on Thursday in Geneva.
This Swiss city notably shares 73km Lake Geneva overlooking the Alps with France, is heavily influenced by the French and has the highest number of international organisations in the world including the United Nations and Red Cross headquarters.
We stayed at the Hôtel Drake-Longchamp which is centrally located, well-appointed and hospitable with an onsite wine bar and buffet breakfast.
Dinner at 1930s Café du Centre in the Old Town was worth every Swiss franc.
Waiter to Jerrie: Your French is very good - you can order from the French menu.
Waiter to Nigel: You can order from the English menu.
As saffron risotto in particular is a traditional Swiss food, main course was roasted lobster and prawns with lobster bisque and herbed risotto.
Dessert was apple pie made with apples from the Serex Farm in Versoix accompanied by caramel and salted butter ice cream; and the Château Cantelaudette Bordeaux.
We flitted between Switzerland and France yesterday, taking the scenic route around Lake Geneva, starting with a visit to medieval town Yvoire in the southeastern French region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
Our last stop before returning to Geneva was island castle Château de Chillon on Lake Geneva in the Swiss city of Montreux.
Dinner was again in the Old Town, however this time at À La Pomme D'or brasserie in Place du Bourg-de-Four.
To honour another typical dish of Switzerland, we ordered fondue with an artisan cheese blend from the Valais canton, truffles and Champagne served with bread, potatoes and pickles.
We bid farewell to Geneva this morning in the most fitting way: Eating chocolate for breakfast!
